You're blessed when you stay on course | Amanda Cherico

POETRY

You’ll probably like my mom

more than you like me

She reflects heaven

I am dusty amber glass on

the witch shop shelf

I am who she prays will stay

on the path

I am ever inching towards

what she worries

about

Bless mothers always

Daughters find their own

blessings

pulled from between

the rocks

Wade in to the rushing rapids, girls

Steel your legs before

it pulls you

under

Gather what you can

You would like my mom more than me

She puts on her coat and

keeps dry

I squelch when I walk

through the door

Amanda McMoore-Cherico is a poet from Minneapolis, Minnesota. She has a degree in mortuary science and could, in theory, embalm you. Her day jobs include selling wedding dresses and running funeral services. Once she thought she would be a pastor and attended seminary. While she is now non-religious, the bible and themes of Christianity are forever imprinted on her literary consciousness.
